Tom Meny -The Discovery Occurred.
To be discovered:
The photograph on the left was taken by the war photojournalist Michael Kamber. According to an interview I watched several years ago, this was the photo that put him on the map. While many of the war journalist went one direction he went in a different direction and got this photo, proving that doing what the others are doing doesn’t help you stand out.
It is human nature to want recognition for an accomplishment we’ve made. It is hopeful that any recognition leads to something even better. Like musicians who daily grind in hopes of that opportunity being given to them, so do I as a photographer. It just takes one photograph to make a difference, Michael Kamber is proof. But this article is not about me. It is about someone else taking an interest and promoting another. That is what happened to Tom Meny.
“I am a singer/songwriter from Austin. I have been actively playing since around 2009/2010. Ray Prim actually found me on YouTube way back then and shared one of my YouTube videos on Facebook. Since then, I’ve opened for him, he’s had me come play a few songs in the middle of his set, and from there we would book in-the-round shows, etc. My music lays somewhere in the acoustic, Americana, folk, umbrella but I feel it has some soul and rock in there too. After falling into the Kerrville Folk Festival circles, i’ve spent the best part of the last 6-7 years playing solo-acoustic so the most recent opening set at the Stateside at the Paramount was the first band show I had played in 8 years!” – Tom Meny
“I first came across Tom Meny’s music on YouTube. He had a song called Job that really spoke to me. I think we all hate our jobs at times so these lyrics were perfect for the day I was having. I can’t remember how I reached out to him but I eventually asked him to come out and play a few songs before one our sets and the rest is history.” – Ray Prim
It just takes one person to take an interest in another resulting in many being blessed. I had only heard Tom one time before during the Ady Hernandez benefit in November 2022. He sang a few songs with Ray Prim. This was my first time to hear him with his band. It was the beginning of a great night of music.
