Dave Scher – A Human Generator

During the freeze and power outage of 2021, why didn’t TXU use Dave Scher?

I study musicians. I see characteristics of that person, patterns of movement that make great photography. The more I photograph a band/musician, the more I am able to predict an occurrence that I want to capture. That is how I captured Jace O’Spades jump in the air. I had no idea it was going to happen but I knew something was about to happen just by looking at him.

Dave Scher is another one of those artists that I have been photographing for over three years. He is one of those musicians that draws me. I need to hear him. Having been away sunning on the beaches of some Tahitian island, he came back to Austin and this was my first time to capture him for some time. The days of rest and relaxation had not dulled his playing. Last night he was spot on!

Early on in my photographing of him, I noticed that Dave moves his legs, i.e. lifts them from time to time. He will also move his hands and arms away from the guitar. Sometimes both movements are combined. These movements I want to capture because they highlight the energy of this young man. Last night I caught a dance step I had never seen before and the pieces fell into place for me. I know why they happen so naturally for these movements are given no prior thought as to when they occur. They just occur.

Dave is a human generator. When he steps onto the stage a switch is flipped on. This energy is used to play his guitar and sing. There are times when he produces too much energy and it must be dissipated, so it results in a leg or arm movement, or both. The excess energy has to go somewhere. So if you have a power outage then give Dave a call. His playing will keep a light bulb or two on at your house.

In conclusion, this young man is a treasure to Austin. He never disappoints. If you have never seen him then I ask, Why not? He is never too far to see. I drove to Houston and San Antonio to photograph him. You will enjoy his music, originals and classics. Born in Austin, playing in Austin, this “unicorn” has a unique talent that needs to be an entry in your music history.
